The little Artouste train, at an altitude of 2000 metres, is one of the highest trains in Europe. It’s a great day out for children of all ages. It was built in 1924 to take workers to the construction site of the hydro-electric dam at Lake Artouste. The diesel locomotives rattle along the side of an untouched valley on a narrow gauge track for 10 kilometres. Passengers are presented with spectacular panoramic views over the Ossau mountains and the Soussouéou valley. The first port of call on the journey is Fabrèges Lake. From a base of 1200 metres, a cable car whisks you up the mountain to the Col de la Sagette where the train station is located. From here, you join the open-top train to enjoy the hour-long scenic journey. Occasionally, a shepherd will hitch a lift to one of the flocks of sheep that graze on the mountain. On arrival, you can take a gentle stroll along marked paths to Artouste Lake. At an altitude of 1989 metres, the lake spreads out at the foot of some of the highest peaks in the Atlantic Pyrenees.
